In the last two years or so, it has come to my attention that there is a smidge of sci-fi geek in me, and I never knew it. Really. It never occurred to me that reading vampire “novels” wasn’t main stream, or that my extreme enthusiasm for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, as created by Joss Whedon, was an indication of Sci-Fi love, either. It’s not that I wish I had known, figuring it out has been fun. But I feel as though I’ve missed out on a few things.
Thankfully, I have some pretty fantastic and slightly more geeky friends to help me out. For example, until recently I’d never seen any of the Star Wars movies start to finish. I’ve now seen Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back and have thoroughly enjoyed both of them. I’m looking forward to another night in with pizza, a bottle of wine and Return of the Jedi.
I’m now working my way through another Joss Whedon series, Angel. I’m borrowing the DVDs from friends so I’m watching the seasons out of order (1, 3 and then 5) but I’m loving it none the less. I can usually manage an episode or two a week. Sometimes I feel like watching it all at once, but another part of me likes to draw it out.
This past weekend I got to see Super 8 and I loved it. I got in the car and the first words out of my mouth were “I need to own this movie.” The ending was a little too nicely wrapped up (surprise, surprise, I’m not big on super happy endings) for my taste, but it was fun and heart warming and jump-out-of-my-skin surprises entertaining. Young friendships, mystery, childhood shenanigans and first love so well depicted I felt like I was 12 again. And then the minor sci-fi piece of the story, but I won’t say anything about that in case you haven’t seen it yet.
Next up, another Joss Whedon, Firefly. I can hardly wait.
I love you. That is all. 🙂
Love you, too, Megabucks!
